We have holidaymakers from all over Europe, America and from Australia, New Zealand and in fact we have been visited by over thirty nationalities. This is in the short time we have been open – less than five years. Many of our guests come and stay time and time again and we have some guests who visit for approximately five weeks each year. Before we came to Willow Pool in the Cotswold Water Park we lived in Greasbrough South Yorkshire where we ran a busy Post Office and Convenience Store. It was a very stressful occupation and most of the Post Offices in our area had armed robberies and hold ups during the time we were there. We were ramraided on one occasion when a stolen car was driven straight through our front doors doing about ten thousand pounds worth of damage in order to steal two thousand pounds worth of cigarettes. The police helicopter was overhead within three minutes but the criminals were never caught. The pace of life in Gloucestershire is far less stressful. It is amazing to wake every morning and see the sun rising over our lakes, before taking a stroll round the lakes, collecting the eggs from our free range hens, and if we’re lucky gathering wild mushrooms. The first meal of the day is always a feast! Our day starts early with many of our visitors rising at dawn to go bird watching, or fishing in our well stocked lakes. Willow Lake is the most popular lake for fishing with carp. Tench, bream. Roach, pike, perch and eels all being caught on a regular basis. A fishing tackle shop nearby makes it very easy for the fishermen to replenish supplies when needed. About 8.30 most of them are tempted in buy the scent of eggs, bacon, sausages, mushrooms, tomatoes, fried bread and baked beans wafting across the water. Continental breakfasts are available for those with a smaller appetite and scrambled eggs and smoked salmon is a popular item on the menu. Fresh fruit salad, fruit juice, yoghurts and toast complete the menu. With full stomachs most of our guests take a stroll around our nature trail before going out for the day. The grounds were landscaped by a former owner who previously worked in forestry. His love of trees is evident as you walk around. There are many varieties of trees planted about forty years ago. Apart from the more commono trees you will see a judas tree, a spindle tree, gingko bilobas, a handkerchief tree, a tulip tree, persian ironwood, sargents rowan huepah rowan, willow leaved pear, and bird cherry. These trees look wonderful all year but are particularly outstanding in the spring and summer. For those who enjoy walking or cycling there are many foot paths and cycle routes in the area. Bikes can be hired from Keynes Country Park about a mile away. The Thames Path begins approximately three miles from Willow Pool and it is possible to walk from here to London in about a fortnight. Neighbridge about half a mile from here is the nearest place to join the Thames Path. For those who don’t want such a long walk there are numerous waymarked paths around the lakes. This is an ideal location for bird watchers.
