The Cotswold Water Park is an ideal place to spend a weekend, take a short break or spend a longer holiday. The water Park is already of National Importance and heading for international recognition for its wetlands. Due to its
zoned structure the wonderful nature reserves are well away from the areas for water sports and this explains the attraction to visitors with a wide variety of interests.
Willow Pool is nestled in the quiet zone and is a stunning place to stay and observe wildlife. Willow Pool is in fact the only Bed and Breakfast or guest house facility which is fortunate enough to have its own lakes and parkland.
The Water Park sometimes referred to as The Cotswold Lakes covers 33 square miles in the counties of Gloucestershire and Wiltshire and includes over 130 lakes. Ten of the lakes are designated as sites of special scientific interest (SSSI) The exceptionally high quality of the water here means that many rare aquatic plants thrive here and the area supports huge numbers of dragonflies of many different colours.
The water park is divided into two sections. Willow Pool is in the Western section as are the villages of Somerford Keynes, South Cerney, Cerney Wick and Ashton Keynes. The Eastern section includes the area around the villages of Fairford, Whelford and Lechlade.
With so much water in this area it is not surprising that fishing is very popular and many fishing clubs own waters in this area. The majority of the fishing Lakes are owned by South Cerney or Ashton Keynes Angling Clubs and day tickets may be obtained locally.
Visitors to Willow Pool are able to enjoy free fishing which is exclusively available for our guests. Many of our visitors return time and time again and many of these return guests are fishermen.
Steve has been interested in fishing from a very tender age having been encouraged by his father who is also a very keen fisherman. As a young man he furthered his knowledge by working at a fish farm in Nottinghamshire and later worked as a water bailiff for Anglian Water Authority. It was a dream he thought he would never achieve to have his own fishery. During the five years that he has been at Willow Pool the fishing has improved immensely. When we came there was already a good fish population with some very good tench and bream. Steve has introduced carp and some are now approaching twenty pounds in weight. . Willow Pool is predominately a summer fishery and nowadays, catches of sixty pounds or more are quite common.
In the winter some of our fishermen guests return to fish for the pike. This year the record pike caught in Willow Lake was 22 pounds - a weight caught by two separate anglers.
Bird Watchers now come to The Cotswold Water Park in increasing numbers. A total of fourteen species of waterfowl breed in the Water Park At Willow Pool we have Great Crested Grebe, Coot, Mallard, Pochard and Mute Swan breeding regularly with many other birds visiting. Kingfishers and grey herons are often seen at breakfast time.
More active guests can walk around our nature trail at Willow Pool or enjoy canoeing or sailing on Willow or Damsel Lake. Guests are also welcome to swim in the crystal clear water at Willow Pool.
